What Is a .idlk File?

InDesign left a .idlk file next to your document and the layout will not open. It is just a lock file. Here is what it does and how to clear an orphaned one safely.

What a .idlk file is

A .idlk file is the lock file Adobe InDesign writes the moment you open a document (.indd). It carries the same base name as the document and sits in the same folder, usually hidden with a leading tilde (~Brochure.idlk beside Brochure.indd). While it exists, InDesign treats the document as "in use."

Why it exists

The lock stops two people on a shared drive from opening and editing the same layout at once, which would let them overwrite each other's work. When you close the document normally, InDesign deletes the .idlk automatically.

Why it will not delete

If the lock stays behind when nobody has the file open, InDesign did not shut down cleanly — a crash, a force-quit, or a hidden InDesign process still holding it. On a network share, another user or a sync client (Dropbox, OneDrive, Creative Cloud) may still have the folder open.

Is it safe to delete?

Yes — once InDesign is fully closed on every machine that touches the file. The .idlk holds none of your layout; it only marks the document as locked. Deleting an orphaned lock does not harm the .indd. The next time you open the document, InDesign creates a fresh lock.

How to clear a stuck .idlk

1. Close InDesign everywhere the document is open. 2. On Windows, open Task Manager and end any lingering InDesign.exe; on Mac, Force Quit InDesign. 3. Show hidden files, then delete the ~*.idlk next to your .indd. 4. If it still will not delete, restart the machine to release the ghost lock, then delete it.

On a shared / network document

Confirm no other user still has the layout open and that no sync client is holding the folder. A sync client that keeps the file open will recreate the lock right after you delete it — pause syncing first.

FAQ

What is a .idlk file?

It is the lock file Adobe InDesign creates while an .indd document is open, marking it as in use so two people cannot edit the same layout at once.

Is it safe to delete a .idlk file?

Yes, once InDesign is fully closed everywhere the document is open. It holds no layout data, so deleting an orphaned lock does not harm your .indd.

Why won't my .idlk file delete?

Usually InDesign crashed or a hidden InDesign process is still running, or a sync client is holding the folder. End the process (or restart) and pause syncing, then delete it.

The .indd still says it is in use after I deleted the .idlk — why?

A second InDesign process, another user on the network share, or a sync client reopened the document and recreated the lock. Make sure every copy is closed and syncing is paused before deleting again.
