Microsoft Edge Download Stuck — Fast Fix

When an Edge download freezes near the end, the file is usually fully downloaded and Edge is just stuck on the final SmartScreen/Defender safety scan. The quickest fix is to pause and resume the download, or disable the scan for a moment. Steps below.

The fast fix (works for most cases)

  1. Pause, wait 15 seconds, then Resume. Open the downloads panel (Ctrl+J), click the pause icon on the stuck item, wait, then Resume. This forces Edge to re-check the file and usually completes it.
  2. If it's stuck at 100%: the file is downloaded but SmartScreen is scanning it. Go to Windows Security → App & browser control → Reputation-based protection and turn off Check apps and files for a moment, then let the download finish.
  3. Find the partial file manually. Edge saves the in-progress file as name.ext.crdownload in your Downloads folder. If it's the full size, rename it (remove .crdownload) and open it.

Why Edge downloads stall

  • SmartScreen / antivirus scan on the finished file — most common at 100%.
  • Large files (multi-GB) — Edge 148 had a known bug freezing big transfers; update Edge (edge://settings/help).
  • Extensions — test in an InPrivate window (Ctrl+Shift+N); if it works there, an extension is blocking it.
  • Full disk — the download target drive is out of space.

If nothing works

Copy the download link, open it in Chrome or Firefox, or paste it into a download manager (Free Download Manager, JDownloader). These renegotiate the connection from scratch.

FAQ

Why is my Edge download stuck at 100%?

The file is fully downloaded and Edge is running the final SmartScreen/Defender safety scan. Pause and resume it, or temporarily turn off 'Check apps and files' under Windows Security → App & browser control, and the download will complete.

Where does Edge put a download that never finished?

In your Downloads folder as name.ext.crdownload. If that file is the full expected size, just remove the .crdownload ending and open it.

Edge downloads large files freeze my whole browser. Is that a bug?

Yes — Edge version 148 had a confirmed bug freezing the UI on multi-gigabyte downloads. Update Edge via edge://settings/help, or use a dedicated download manager for big files.

How do I resume a stuck Edge download?

Press Ctrl+J to open the downloads list, click the pause button on the stuck item, wait ~15 seconds, then click Resume. This makes Edge re-negotiate and finish the transfer.
