What a .001 file is
A .001 file is the first part of a file that was split into numbered chunks — .001, .002, .003 and so on. Splitting is used to move or upload something too big in one piece. On its own a .001 is incomplete; you need all the parts, in the same folder, to rebuild the original.
How to join and open them
Put every part in one folder, then use a tool that understands split files: 7-Zip (right-click the .001 → 7-Zip → Extract) is the easiest and free. HJSplit or the original splitter that made them also work. 7-Zip reads the .001, pulls in .002, .003… automatically, and reconstructs the real file — often an archive or video inside.
What if a part is missing?
You cannot rebuild the file without every numbered part. If .003 is missing, download it again — the join will fail or produce a corrupt file otherwise.
Is it safe to delete?
Once you have successfully joined and opened the real file, the numbered parts are just duplicates and safe to delete. Keep them until you have confirmed the rebuilt file works.
